Flow Meter Vacuum Application Sizing: Handling Low Absolute Pressures in Gas Processing

Quick Answer: For gas processing at low absolute pressure, the first meter options are a thermal mass flow meter or a Coriolis mass flow meter. Thermal meters handle low pressure gas well when the gas composition is stable. Coriolis meters offer high accuracy but need a larger pipe size to limit pressure drop. Always size the meter at actual volumetric flow, not standard flow, because vacuum conditions multiply the actual volume.

Why Vacuum Gas Flow Meter Sizing Is Different

Gas density drops at low absolute pressure. At 0.2 bar absolute, the same mass of gas occupies about five times the volume it occupies at 1.013 bar absolute. A flow meter sized only on Nm³/h can be too small when the real pipe flow is five times higher. This is the most common mistake we see on gas processing sites in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

In practice, you should always convert standard volumetric flow to actual volumetric flow before choosing a line size. You also need to check gas velocity. For most gas meters, velocity should stay below 0.3 Mach to avoid noise, erosion, and signal error. In vacuum service, low density reduces the signal strength of vortex and ultrasonic meters. Many engineers choose thermal mass or Coriolis for vacuum gas lines for this reason.

Thermal Mass Flow Meters for Low Absolute Pressure Gas

A thermal mass flow meter measures gas mass flow directly. It does not need pressure compensation because it is not a volumetric device. For vacuum gas processing, this type of meter is a strong candidate. Silver Instruments supplies thermal mass flow meters with inline or insertion designs from DN15 to DN200 and larger. Accuracy can reach plus or minus 1.5 percent of reading in gas with 4-20 mA HART output and ATEX Zone 1 options.

We have seen customers use these meters on vacuum distillation vents, biogas recovery lines, and flare gas headers. One customer in Vietnam ran a gas stream at 0.3 bar absolute and 40 degrees Celsius. The inline thermal meter with a DN50 body gave stable readings after calibration with the actual gas composition. Do not use an air calibration if the process gas is methane, hydrogen, or CO2. Tell us the gas mix before ordering.

Coriolis Flow Meters in Vacuum Service

Coriolis mass flow meters are accurate and repeatable in gas service. They measure mass directly and are not sensitive to density changes for the mass reading. The problem in vacuum service is pressure drop. Because the gas expands, the actual volumetric flow is high. A Coriolis meter with a small bore can create a pressure drop that adds load to the vacuum pump.

Size a Coriolis meter in vacuum gas by actual flow volume and allowed pressure drop in mbar. If you have 50 kg/h of gas at 0.2 bar absolute, the actual volumetric flow may be several hundred cubic meters per hour. A DN25 Coriolis meter may be too small. A DN50 or DN80 meter is often a better match. Silver Instruments offers Coriolis mass flow meters from DN3 to DN150 with density and temperature output.

Vortex and Ultrasonic Meters in Low Pressure Gas

Here is the thing. Vortex flow meters are popular for steam and compressed air, but they can fail in vacuum gas. The vortex signal depends on gas density and velocity squared. At 0.1 bar absolute, the density is too low for a stable signal unless the velocity is very high. Most engineers skip a vortex meter below 0.3 bar absolute for this reason.

Ultrasonic flow meters have a similar limitation. Low gas density means a weak acoustic signal. Ultrasonic meters can work

on high pressure gas, but vacuum gas often causes poor signal to noise ratio. We do not recommend a standard clamp on or inline ultrasonic meter for most vacuum gas processing lines unless the manufacturer confirms the minimum density and pressure limits.

Pressure Transmitter Ranges for Vacuum Gas Processing

You should also measure the absolute pressure during flow calculation. A gauge pressure transmitter with a range of -1 to 0 bar g will not give the same data as an absolute transmitter with a range of 0 to 1.6 bar absolute. For vacuum gas processing, use an absolute pressure transmitter or a gauge transmitter with a known atmospheric reference. Silver Instruments pressure transmitters offer accuracy of 0.075 percent of span and 4-20 mA HART output.

Install the pressure transmitter at the flow meter if the meter has pressure compensation. For thermal mass flow meters, pressure compensation is not required for the mass reading, but pressure data helps you monitor the vacuum pump and line performance. The temperature sensor can be a PT100 integrated into the flow meter.

FAQ: Vacuum Flow Meter Sizing

Can a thermal mass flow meter be used under vacuum pressure?
Yes. Thermal mass flow meters work under vacuum. Provide the actual gas composition and the minimum absolute pressure. Silver Instruments calibrates the meter for your gas mix so the reading stays stable.

What is the minimum absolute pressure for a Coriolis meter in gas service?
There is no fixed minimum pressure for the mass reading, but low pressure increases actual volume and pressure drop. Size the meter by actual volumetric flow and check the pressure drop in mbar. A larger meter body often solves the issue.

Why does a vortex flow meter fail in high vacuum?
The vortex signal weakens as gas density drops. Below about 0.3 bar absolute, many vortex meters lose repeatability. Use a thermal mass or Coriolis meter instead.

Do I need a pressure transmitter on a vacuum flow meter?
For thermal mass and Coriolis meters, the mass reading does not require pressure compensation. Pressure data is still useful for vacuum pump monitoring and reporting. Use an absolute pressure transmitter for accurate vacuum measurement.

Can Silver Instruments supply ATEX approved vacuum flow meters?
Yes. Silver Instruments offers ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 options for thermal mass flow meters, Coriolis meters, and pressure transmitters. Tell us the gas group and temperature class.
